Ben may be struggling to tell the difference between his dreams and waking reality. At the same time, the television’s unusual capabilities are beginning to unsettle him, placing additional strain on an already fragile emotional state. Together, these experiences blur his sense of control and deepen his growing unease.

Ben’s physical health is improving rapidly, but his mental and emotional state continues to decline. This deterioration worsens when the television ordered by Abbie is delivered. In Chapter Two, Ben begins to notice the television’s unusual features. Although Emily and Martha remain supportive, Ben is increasingly consumed by a deeper fear—the possibility that he may have lost his job.

Due to a serious injury, Ben Duckworth is confined to his apartment for an extended period. For weeks, he has been overwhelmed by the confusion and immobility brought on by heavy pain medication. The story begins as Ben starts to show signs of both mental and physical improvement. Surrounded by people who care about him, he is gently reminded that recovery takes time and must follow its natural course. In an effort to make long days more bearable, a close friend purchases a television, giving Ben’s significant other, Emily, something to share with him as she spends long hours at his apartment.
